Kerajaan Terumanagara
merupakan kerajaan Hindu tertua ke dua setelah Kerajaan Kutai. Kerajaan
Tarumanagara atau Kerajaan Tarum merupakan kerajaan yang berkuasa di
wilayah barat pulau Jawa pada abad ke-4 hingga abad ke-7 Masehi.
Kata
Tarumanagara berasal dari kata Tarum dan Nagara. Tarum yang merupakan
nama sungai yang membelah Jawa Barat yang sekarang bernama sungai
Citarum dan kata Nagara yang diartikan sebagai negara atau kerajaan.
Beridirnya Kerajaan Tarumanagara
Berdirinya
Kerajaan Tarumanagara masih dipertanyakan oleh para ahli sejarah.
Satu-satunya sumber sejarah yang secara lengkap membahas mengenai
Kerajaan Tarumanagara adalah Naskah Wangsakerta. Naskah Wangsakerta
tersebut masih menjadi perdebatan diantara para sejarawan tentang
keaslian isinya.
Menurut
Naskah Wangsakerta, pada abad ke-4 Masehi, pulau dan beberapa wilayah
Nusantara lainnya didatangi oleh sejumlah pengungsi dari India yang
mencari perlindungan akibat terjadinya peperangan besar di sana. Para
pengungsi itu umumnya berasal dari daerah Kerajaan Palawa dan
Calankayana di India, pihak yang kalah dalam peperangan melawan Kerajaan
Samudragupta (India).
Salah
satu dari rombongan pengungsi Calankayana dipimpin oleh seorang
Maharesi yang bernama Jayasingawarman. Setelah mendapatkan persetujuan
dari raja yang berkuasa di barat Jawa (Dewawarman VIII, raja
Salakanagara), maka Jayasingawarman membuka tempat pemukiman baru di
dekat sungai Citarum. Pemukimannya oleh Jayasingawarman diberi nama
Tarumadesya (desa Taruma).
Sepuluh
tahun kemudian desa ini banyak didatangi oleh penduduk dari desa lain,
sehingga Tarumadesya menjadi besar. Akhirnya dari wilayah setingkat desa
berkembang menjadi setingkat kota (Nagara). Semakin hari, kota ini
semakin menunjukan perkembangan yang pesat, karena itulah
Jayasingawarman kemudian membentuk sebuah Kerajaan yang bernama
Tarumanagara.
Kejayaan Kerajaan Tarumanagara
Kerajaan
Tarumanagara mencapai puncak kejayaannya ketika dipimpin oleh
Purnawarman. Dimasa kepemerintahan Purnawarman, luas Kerajaan
Tarumanagara diperluas dengan menaklukan kerajaan-kerajaan yang berada
disekitarnya. Tercatat Luas Kerajaan Tarumanagara hampir sama dengan
luas daerah Jawa Barat sekarang. Selain itu Raja Purnawarman juga
menyusun pustaka yang berupa undang-undang kerjaana, peraturan angkatan
perang, siasat perang serta silsilah dinasti Warman. Raja Purnawarman
juga dikenal sebagai raja yang kuat dan bijak kepada rakyatnya.
Keruntuhan Kerajaan Tarumanagara
Raja
ke-12 Tarumanagara, Linggawarman, memiliki dua orang putri. Putri
pertamanya bernama Dewi Manasih yang kemudian menikah dengan Tarusbawa
dan Sobakencana yang kemudian menjadi isteri Dapunta Hyang Sri Jayanasa,
pendiri Kerajaan Sriwijaya. Tangku kepemimpian Kerajaan Tarumanegara
pun jatuh pada suami Manasih yaitu Tarusbawa. Pada masa kepemerintahan
Tarusbawa, pusat kerajaan Tarumanagara ke kerajaanya sendiri yaitu
Kerajaan Sunda (Kerajaan bawahan Tarumanagara) dan kemudian mengganti
Kerajaan Tarumanagara menjadi Kerajaan Sunda.

Sumber Sejarah Kerajaan Tarumanagara
Kerajaan Tarumanagara banyak meninggalkan bukti sejarah, diantaranya ditemukannya 7 buah prasati yaitu:
- Prasasti Ciareteun
yang ditemukan di Ciampea, Bogor. Pada prasasti tersebut terdapat
ukiran laba-laba dan tapak kaki serta puisi beraksara Palawa dan
berbahasa Sanskerta. Puisi tersebut berbuyi "Kedua (jejak) telapak
kaki yang seperti (telapak kaki) Wisnu ini kepunyaan raja dunia yang
gagah berani yang termashur Purnawarman penguasa Tarumanagara."
- Prasasti Pasri Koleangkak yang ditemukan di perkebunan Jambu. Parsasti ini juga sering disebut sebagai Prasasti Jambu. Prasasti Jambu berisi "Yang
termashur serta setia kepada tugasnya ialah raja yang tiada taranya
bernama Sri Purnawarman yang memerintah Taruma serta baju perisainya
tidak dapat ditembus oleh panah musuh-musuhnya; kepunyaannyalah kedua
jejak telapak kaki ini, yang selalu berhasil menghancurkan benteng
musuh, yang selalu menghadiahkan jamuan kehormatan (kepada mereka yang
setia kepadanya), tetapi merupakan duri bagi musuh-musuhnya."
- Prasasti Kebonkopi
yang ditemukan di kampung Muara Hilir, Cibungbulang. Isi prasasti Kebon
Kopi : yakni adanya dua kaki gajah yang disamakan dengan tapak kaki
gajah Airawati (gajah kendaran Dewa Wisnu). Sedangkan Prasasti Jambu
berisi tentang kegagahan raja Purnawarman. Bunyi prasasti itu antara
lain :"gagah, mengagumkan dan jujur terhadap tugasnya adalah pemimpin
manusia yang tiada taranya, yang termasyhur Sri Purnawarman, yang
memerintah di taruma dan yang baju zirahnya tak dapat ditembus oleh
musuh ..."
- Prasasti Tugu yang ditemukan di dareah Tugu, Jakarta.
- Prasasti Pasir Awi yang ditemukan di daerah Pasir Awi, Bogor.
- Prasasti Muara Cianten yang juga ditemukan di Bogor.
- Prasasti Cidanghiang atau Lebak yang ditemukan di kampung Lebak, pinggir Sungai Cidanghiang, Pandeglang-Banten. Prasasti Didanghiang berisi “Inilah
tanda keperwiraan, keagungan dan keberanian yang sesungguh-sungguhnya
dari raja dunia, yang mulia Purnawarman, yang menjadi panji sekalian
raja”.
Selain dari prasasti, terdapat juga suber-sumber lain yang berasal dari Cina, diantarnya:
- Berita
dari Fa-Hien, seorang musafir Cina (pendeta Budha) yang terdampar di
Yepoti (Yawadhipa/Jawa) tepatnya Tolomo (Taruma) pada tahun 414. Dalam
catatannya di sebutkan rakyat Tolomo sedikit sekali memeluk Budha yang
banyak di jumpainya adalah Brahmana dan Animisme.
- Berita
dari Dinasti Soui yang menyatakan bahwa pada tahun 528 dan 535 datang
utusan dari negeri Tolomo (Taruma) yang terletak disebelah selatan.
- Berita dari Dinasti Tang Muda yang menyebutkan tahun 666 dan tahun 669 M datang utusan dari Tolomo.
Raja-raja Kerajaan Tarumanagara
Selama
berdirinya Kerajaan Tarumanagara dari abad ke-4 sampai abad ke-7
Masehi, kerajaan tersebut pernah dipimpin oleh 12 orang raja,
diantaranya:
- Jayasingawarman (358-382 M.)
- Dharmayawarman (382-395 M.)
- Purnawarman (395-434 M.)
- Wisnuwarman (434-455 M.)
- Indrawarman (455-515 M.)
- Candrawarman (515-535 M.)
- Suryawarman (535-561 M.)
- Kertawarman (561-628 M.)
- Sudhawarman (628-639 M.)
- Hariwangsawarman (639-640 M.)
- Nagajayawarman (640-666 M.)
- Linggawarman (666-669 M.)
Kehidupan Sosial-Ekonomi dan Kebudayaan Kerajaan Tarumanagara
Kehidupan
perekonomian masyarakat Tarumanegara adalah pertanian dan peternakan.
Hal ini dapat diketahui dari isi Prasasti Tugu yakni tentang pembangunan
atau penggalian saluran Gomati yang panjangnya 6112 tombak (12 km)
selesai dikerjakan dalam waktu 21 hari. Masyarakat Kerajaan Tarumanagara
juga berprofesi sebagai pedagang mengingat letaknya yang strategis
berada di dekat selat sunda.
Pembangunan/penggalian
itu mempunyai arti ekonomis bagi rakyat, karena dapat digunakan sebagai
sarana pengairan dan pencegahan banjir. Selain penggalian saluran
Gomati dalam prasasti Tugu juga disebutkan penggalian saluran
Candrabhaga. Dengan demikian rakyat akan hidup makmur, aman, dan
sejahtera.
Dari
segi kebudayaan sendiri, Kerajaan Tarumanagara bisa dikatakan
kebudayaan mereka sudah tinggi. Terbukti dengan penggalian sungai untuk
mencegah banjir dan sebagai saluran irigasi untuk kepentingan pertanian.
Terlihat pula dari teknik dan cara penulisan huruf-huruf pada prasasti
yang ditemukan, menjadi bukti kebudayaan masyarakat pada saat itu
tergolong sudah maju.
